Cranking-Up Issues

I've got a 1992 Ford Ranger 4.0 V6 that will turn over but not start. I've checked the battery and replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuse. I have also checked the fuel switch button and it is already pressed down. It still will not crank and I'm not sure what else it could be.

Welcome to the forum

Pull off the big air tube on the intake/throttle body, make sure it can't hit the fan blades
Open throttle and spray fuel into the engine directly, called 50/50 test
Try to start engine
If it starts, runs and dies, you have a fuel delivery issue
If it doesn't start/fire then its a spark issue
50/50 no guessing

1992 4.0l has a separate spark system, the computer only runs the fuel system

Watch the CEL(check engine light)
CEL comes on with key on, that means computer has powered up, no CEL = no computer so no fuel
Try to start
CEL should go OFF as soon as engine is turning, that means the spark system is sending a good Timing Pulse to the computer do computer will start fuel injectors, no pulse = no spark and no injectors

1992 computer can have bad capacitors inside, under $5 to fix but when they go out you can get rough running and of course no start

I tried spraying starting fluid into it and it started! That being said what do you recommend I check first fuel wise since I’ve already replaced the fuel pump and filter?

And the CEL come on with key on?
If not then no fuel injectors, computer is off
Does CEL go OFF when cranking, if not then injectors are not opening

Easy test is to crank engine over a few times then pull out any easy to get at spark plug
Its TIP should be WET with fuel
If its DRY then injectors are not opening or there is no fuel pressure
If its WET, light it with a match/lighter, should burn fast and bright, like gasoline, if not then you do not have "fuel" in the tank, usually water

1992 4.0l will have a fuel pressure test port on passenger side of the lower intake
Looks like this: https://www.reddit.com/media?url=htt...e14c53649480f9

Below the circle, has a black cap on it
Unscrew the cap, this is a Schrader Valve, same valve as found on tires, press center pin and fuel should SPRAY out, 15-30psi pressure
Cycle key on and off, you should HEAR the new fuel pump run for 2 seconds each time key is turned on
After cycling key test for fuel pressure
