Hello Ranger Forum,

I have found a 99 Ranger 4x4 with 4.0 engine and manual transmission. The owner says the engine will not start and had low compression and gradually lost power over time. If the truck checks out I would be interested in swapping a used engine.

Scrap yards are looking for close to 1000$. I would be OK dealing with a local person parting out a vehicle if I knew there were no compatibility issues with the donor engine. Even for the same year Ranger, I have read there are balance shafts on the 4.0 4WD and not 2WD. Not sure if that's an issue. Also don't know if I can just swap out a drive plate with a flywheel and go on my way. I would also love to open this up to any other compatible vehicle that had a 4.0. As a last resort, if I had to pull off the electronics and swap them I would consider that.

Best case is I would like to get some understanding of what vehicles are compatible so I can do the swap and not have issues in the future. I still have to pass emissions for a few years in NJ. This truck would be a work vehicle, but I don't want to create a frankenstein.
