Icon11 EGR Valve Pos sensor location

Hi Guys, A little help? Where is the Egr valve position sensor located and is it hard to get at and clean. I've been told that it could be causing a buck and it's a lot cheaper to clean it than replace it. What do you think? Thanks ahead of time.

I'll have to assume that you are talking about a 98 Ranger since that's what is listed in your profile.

There is no EGR position sensor on a 98 (although some parts stores erroneously label it as such). Instead, the EGR system uses a differential pressure flow sensor called a DPFE or DEPT. There is nothing to clean except to disconnect the two hoses overnight and let any accumulated moisture dry out. Use care because it is easy to damage the hardened hoses after years and miles.

The location varies by year and engine but it is always connected to the EGR tube by 2 hoses and always has a 3-wire connector going to it. The general appearance should be similar to the one below and it could be metal or plastic. Should be easy to find.

The DPFE is probably the most unreliable factory emission component on your truck. If you are using aftemarket replacements, even more so.
