engine chater.

I have '03 Fx4 w/ the 4.0L SOHC. I have been noticing a chater at moderate engine driving speed, 30-45+mph. Does/Has anyone had this issue with there's. Im hoping it some what normal. It runs and drives great. No sound at idle and no performance loss. Just curious, I had a serious issue with a '99 Explorer I owned that had something simailar, but it actually had lots more issues than I could afford. (used Car- Stupid purchase) So I got rid of it. And bought this truck. Truck is great.

Ah you have the annoying timing chain rattle like all of us do. Its pretty common in most every 4.0. Nothing really to worry about, but you can take it to the dealer and see if they can do something about it, there are TSB's on it.

What is "TSB"? What is you dont have a warranty on your truck? Is there a way to fix it your self?

TSB is a Techincal Service Bulletin. Regardless if you are under warranty or not, if you have a problem with your vehicle, they have to fix it, free. Pretty much like a recall.

A TSB is different from a recall. If you are out of warranty YOU pay for the repair. A TSB is simply the fix for a known, or common, problem.

Ya i noticed this on my truck the other day aswell, took it to the dealer and he told me it was exactly that, the primary chain tension was rattling. They told me it is a common problem, I also had a noise coming from inside the engine, found out it was a fuel injector, I guess another common problem, not just in the rangers but in the F150s aswell. Our trucks sure do make alot of anoying little noises lol, between that and the humm from my fan when Im running air or heat, the radio keeps getting turned up more and more lol

I mean, Im not real excited about the chater. But, I thought that's what it was. I had a '99 Xplorer that had that problem, but the actually timing chain guides were broken. (b/c the previous owner(s) didn't take car of it and I bought it after my mechanic said it was "ok" I should have read in to "ok" more. It was in real bad shape internally, lots a Sludge> so much it could have cloged the oil pump.) THere's more to it. But, I know it will be ok b/c i take real good care of my vehicles. But, my '79 on the other hand needs body and paint bad. Other wise she good to roll out.

Im assuming your not under warranty anymore if so i would go ahead and get it taken care of assuming you trust the mechanic doing the work, it will only progressivly get worse as the chain looses tension and begins to wear out your guides.
