Engine Tick

Hey folks! New to the ranger forum. I have an 04 4.0 sohc with 181k miles. When I got it had an engine tick. I swapped out all the fluids and it’s still there. Yesterday, engine light comes on and coded for a misfire in cylinder 2.

The tick gets faster with RPMs. Doesn’t go away when warmed up. I can hear it kind of coming from passenger side.

I’m reading something about lifter tick…but then I’m also reading that the SOHC doesn’t have those so it wouldn’t be an issue? This sounds awfully familiar to that.

I’ll take it to a mechanic this week but I wanted to give them some areas to check for. Any thoughts?

Ohc engines do have hydraulic lash adjusters. They pump up and keep tension on the rocker. If they get gummed up they can cause a tick. Had this issue on a 3.7L Jeep. If they get bad enough on the jeeps you can actually drop a rocker. I've never had a SOHC ranger though.

Welcome to the Herd; lots of friendly knowledgable folk in these forums!
Could be a bad IgnitionPlugWire#2 on that right center cylinder; shorting & making that ticking sound + causing misfire.
How old are Plugs+Wires+OxSensors? Should be renewed every 100kMiles\12years.
