Failed smog,,,help
The truck I am buying failed smog due to the fuel evaperator test. They are doing the new testing here in california thats called a fuel evap test. So where is the fuel evaperator at on the 93 ranger? I know its part of the fuel injection.
No -- it's not part of the injection system. We need more info. Did they sniff the gas cap and find this with a tester for instance? Sniff in your engine compartment?
There is no "fuel evaporator" test of a part called the evaporator. Instead, they are looking to see if evaporating fuel vapors are getting out of your vehicle. This would mean leaky fuel system seals or gas cap, etc.
There is a fuel evaporative emission control system and it may be on 93's too. That's where a charcoal cannister is used to capture all the vapor from your gas tank when the truck is sitting, then when you start your truck a "purge valve" opens at a certain time to suck air back through the charcoal and purge the gasoline vapor out of it.
This system could be the problem also. It's hard to know what to look at without more information. Didn't they say more than that it just failed? You might want to look up the rules in your state to see what they are testing.

1. Make sure the gas cap is good.
If it is then the best way to find a leak in the EVAP system is with a smoke tester. Take the truck to a shop with one of these machines. It's a pricey way of getting the leak found, but on the other hand it can save hours of aggrivation with vacuum pumps trying to accomplish the same thing.
Basically, low pressure smoke is pumped into the intake (vacuum) system. All possible points of exit are blocked off (e.g. air filter housing) so that there is a true air-tight environment. Any leaks in the intake, and thereby the fuel EVAP system, will be shown by the leaking smoke.
As long as the gas cap is good, they will be looking for leaks predominantly in the lines going to the charcoal canister and the filler neck tube.
Good luck! Sometimes finding these leaks can be a real pain ...

Man, I sure hope mine passes this "NEW STANDARD" smog check!
My registration is due in April and my Ranger has a lot of miles on it. It runs good though and the CEL works as it should, comes on when the key is initially turned on, and then turns off when the engine starts and runs.
Good luck my California brothers!

i found a wire unplugged on mine, on the drivers side of the engine bay, down real low. it was giving me an evap code before i pulgged it back in. the gas cap light would come on. i dont know if an older ranger would have the same problem
