Are ford explorer engines same as rangers?
The shortblock will be the same. You'll have to use the accessories and intake off of your engine. Do yourself a favor and buy a new aftermarket thermostat housing while you're at it. A new water pump, thermostat, plugs, all of the usual stuff...
It likely won't have the balance shaft on the bottom end of the engine, but as many people have figured out, it's not really necessary or worth worrying about.
GB :)

I transplanted a 4x4 long block with balance shaft into my 2wd, and no worries on dimensions...it dropped right in.
Good advice on new therm housing, water pump, and plugs. One more to the list is that knock sensor under the intake.
Since you will likely be transplanting your intake onto a new (to you) long block, that valley in the middle will be open, and that thing is a few bucks to buy.
