Hello everyone. I am having trouble with my 94 4.0 ohv ranger. I think it's the fuel pump but im not sure. Sometimes it will run ok but then it will start to cut out. I'll be going along and it will loose power. I can put my foot to the floor and go about 25. It will get a little gas but it wil buck like a bronco(horse not suv) until I can get it off of the road. It will usually start but sometimes it wont even do that. I switched out the fuel pump relay and thought it fixed it but I was wrong. Does anyone know what might be causing this? I just wanted to make sure that I am getting the right thing before I drop $100+ on a fuel pump.

Also, if it is the fuel pump, is there a aftermarket fuel pump that isnt quite as pricey as the OEM? I know where there is a cheap holley pump but I am used to old carb engines and I dont know how that would work with the computer.

Change the fuel filter then remove the fuel line at the engine. Place a can and some rags at the fuel line and turn the key to RUN without starting the engine. You may have to do this a few times.
Condensation has most likely caused the fuel line to rust inside and is plugging the injectors , so you need to flush it out. I have to do this on my old Dodge every year as it sits to much without being run.
You will the need to remove the injectors and clean them.
I have found that using carb and choke cleaner with the long plastic nozzle stuck down in the inlet side of the injector will blow the crud out quite well BUT WATCH YOUR EYES.

 

I had the same symptoms as ROSCO with my 3.0. The bearings went out in the distributor. The bearings were getting hot then the truck would buck like hell cutting in and out. I had to replace the distributor to correct the problem. I had over 200,000 when mine starting acting up.

 

Actually I have a 94 EFI 4.0L. I thought for sure it was the fuel pump because it wouldn kick on when I turned the key to ignition. Then I went out last night and it did kick on, the truck started runnig bad. So I unplugged the MAF sensor and it started running better. I had changed the MAF last summer but I thought it was defective. I borrowed my brothers MAF and it still runs bad unless I unplug it. Any connection between the MAF and fuel pump. I had gotten to the point where I thought for sure it was the fuel pump, but now that I unplug the MAF I am not sure.
