how long will the 4.0 last and what do you have on yours
Had a 94 Mazda B4000,when I got it from my father-in-law,it had 260,000,with its 3rd tranny,I got rid of it with around 310,000,needing another trans, and as far as I know she is still runnin' with tranny #4,but with engine #1,had a 96 Explorer with 128ish when we got rid of it(needed something a lil bigger, cuz family got bigger)and the lady who bought it now has 170,000 on it.....
my 94 4.0 has 120,xxx miles an it. the only things that have ben replaced besides the normal tune up and everything else like that is a new starter and a new fuel pump.. other than that runs like a champ even at 75 down the highway
I have an '01 with almost 81k on it no major problems with the engine. For the first couple years I had my truck, I had alot of trans. problems, but it's all fixed and it'll last a long time.
Ive seen a few 4.0s in Older explorers that have gone 200K+ miles. What it seems to be is the trannies go out about 130-160K miles. The engines though last damn near forever. but hey its a ford what would u expect? You didnt buy a 3.8 Rejoice!

[QUOTE=wvcat]My 94 I bought in may from the original owner has 170,000 on it and last month I towed my 98 4x4 back with it at 75+ mph. The owner switched to amsoil when it was new. The valves were ticking when cold when I bought it so I changed the oil and added a can of restore and that went away. I'd drive it anywhere.
I just bought a 98 with 227,000 on it. Seems to run fine - drove it home on the highway for 50 miles.
It does have a lifter tick, I might try a can of restore like WVCAT did. Anyone else ever use that?

My dad had a '91 ranger that had 250,000 on it when he sold it and the motor ran great. Lost some power but still started every time, and that's why I bought my 4.0 Ranger...although he was on his third tranny. The new people drove it around for a couple of years until they totaled it. Up until then motor ran well.
