I got 22 mpg...yeeehaaa!!!

I have been driving easy just for an experiment to see how much mileage I could squeeze out of it. Relevant specs: 99 ext cab, 4wd with PVH's, 4.0, 5sp auto, 3:73's, 31x10.50 bfg at's, 1" body lift, 01 edge front end. The first obvious question is: Is this a correct mpg reading? I don't know but the numbers compute. I filled up today. I went 249 miles (still had 1/4 tank) and it took 11.3 gallons to fill. Is the speedo correct? I'm not sure but its not far off. The truck had 265's on it when I got it. How did I do it? Well I have been driving consevatively for this tank of gas. I installed a new air filter last week. Inflated the tires to 36 up front and 32 in the back. Watching the tach and trying to maintain an rpm range between 1500-2000 when possible. Trying not to exceed 55 mph most of the time. I haven't been braking unless needed and have been letting up on the gas and waiting for the light to change. shutting engine off when I estimate more than a 20 second wait. Most of my driving is primary roads, some 4 lane and some city. What do you think? Anybody else getting this kind of mileage out of a 4.0 4wd?

I can get 21 MPG out of my 4.0L/5 speed manual w/4:10 gears driving 55-60 MPH, so I'd say it's possible you got 22 MPG.

Break in is 300, but you wont start seeing real good mpg until your first oil change. thats when mine started to climb.

11.3 gallons seems kinda low for 1/4 tank. Not doubting that you can get 22mpg, but I think your speedo and everything might be off. I have a 3.0 with 4.10 gears and 30.5in tires. I'm getting around 18.7city and 24ish hwy with my programmer.

The 99 have an issue called extreme reserve. 1/4 tank by the gauge is roughly 8 gallons in the tank.

My best mileage was 20 with a/c blasting on a 95 degree day going about 70-75. With 265 rubber.

Well maybe its possible then since I was really driving easy most of the time. I might change plugs and wires this weekend and see if it any to it. I know I need wires.

Yeah that makes sense, I can usually drive to work a couple days after the first sighting of the low fuel light

When the light comes on I would put between 30-50 miles on the tank before filling it up. I ran out of gas once and damn close a few times. After i ran out that one time and cop making me buy a can to get my truck off the street. After that I stopped pushing it so far.

I average 18.5...I drive about 60/40 highway/city.....I have 3.73 and 32s w/steelies.....I try and keep it behind 2200 rpm..i dont go over 70 mph also..I know i could get better on a road trip

What is this about the speedo affecting mileage?? I think mine is off a little, i ran by a cop clocker adn i think i was 7 off, not sure though..was going kinda fast

The speedo doesn't actually effect your mpg but it effects your calculations. If your speedo is wrong so is your calculation if you don't correct the numbers. Lets say you went 250 miles on a tank. Actually you may have only went 235 miles.

When i was running the 265's i figured that for every 100 miles i drove the odo counted 90.

Bigger tires turn less rpms.

I got 22mpg with a truck just like yours, but I had 235's and a stepside. I knew someone could do it.

I think that's pretty good. If that was your first pass at keeping the fuel flow down, who knows what you'll get after you've gotten really good at it?

when my truck was stock.. with headers only. best i saw was 24mpg.. 4.0L auto, 3.55gears.. did all my commuting before dawn or after/during sunset so it was always cooler...

now when i go for long highway trips, ill put 40psi in my tires and i can get 18-19mpg still, even with 33"s and 4.56 gears... call bs all you want, ive already calculated actual mileage counting mile markers over a 100mile section...

i believe you, i pulled off 18 mpg several times with 4.56, superlift, body lift, and 35s

I've gotten 23 MPG once or twice on a road trip, keeping below 70 and driving conservatively.

If i watch it I can get 20 ok on the freeway. City is noticeably less of course.

Keeping the skinny pedal foot light is the best way.

My Explorer when it was seeing mroe highway usage got consistantly 21 mpg in mixed driving. This is 4.0 OHV 5spd auto and 4:10's. none of my rangers ever broke out of the 16-17 range with the same driving and the only drivetrain difference being 4.0 OHC. I got 24 last weekend driving back to MN. I got 9 MPG doing my 1 mile a day driving out of the last tank.

When I had my 2wd, 4.0, 3.55 gears... I was able to get 24mpg on the highway on a long trip with very conservative driving.
With my new 4x4, 4.0, 3.73 gears.. the most I've seen is about 18mpg.
