I'm hearing things... but what is it??

i know theres the infamous timing chain rattle with our SOHC's.

i've figured i was one of the lucky ones that didnt have it... but now im not so sure....

i'm hearing something that almost sounds like a rustling or i guess a rattling coming from the engine bay from time to time. lately i've noticed i will hear it, then the truck will shift (auto tranny), then it will go away with the shift... i think....

it also seems like it's coming from somewhere on the passengers side of the engine bay.... that might be becuase i'm sitting on one side of the truck though...

any ideas???? thanks guys.

what year is your ranger Sean? "supoosedly", the timing chain is limited to certain years like 2002 and below. I'm not sure of the exact range.

I wonder if the tensiioner pulley is going bad? thats cheap enough to just replace and rule it out as an option.

You know what....I've owned my truck for 2.5 years....it started chattering about 3 months after buying it, or about 40k. I'm at 64k now, and don't notice it anymore. i know it;s there, but i don't let it worry me. If it breaks, it breaks. Gotta love '01 and '02 4.0L SOHC!!
