Icon6 I'm a little lost need help what to do on a wiring harness!!!!!

This is my first post on here.

I'm a little lost on what to do next.

I have 2001 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 SOHC 4x4

It was a Automatic transmission. I couldn’t find a good transmission to back as a automatic. So I brought a 2003 Ford ranger with the same run stuff. Just a 5 Speed transmission. I did the swap and everything work good. Just for the PCM reading as the Automatic I know I need to do the wiring harness change to. But I want to see if the 5 speed transmission was worth change over first. Yes, it was it run better as a 5 speed then the Automatic did.

So here I go ready to change the motor wiring harness over on the motor and the transmission. I know it will be different because my old harness was for a automatic transmission. But I notice the Ranger wiring harness is different on the fuse box side and in the cab harness also. Now am little worry what to do now. I don’t know to change the hole wiring harness in my explorer or what! Now am asking for some help to what to do now.

Any help would be nice….

Here is my problem am having and the point am stuck at now.

Yes, I have the PCM for the wiring harness and for the 5 speed transmission.

The wiring harness number out of the Ranger is 12B637 harness and the plug
to the PCM is C175 Gray plug.
The plug C110 plug I have the runs to the other plug that is C115 plug to the fuse box.

Now the Explorer Wiring harness am not sure the number on it. Because I can’t find the ID tag on it.
But the plug is C115 on it from the motor to the fuse box and that’s where I did find the wiring was different then my new wiring harness from the Ranger.

That’s my big problem am having on what to do next? So any help from you all would be nice!

Welcome to the forum

A bit confused, your 2001 had a 5-speed automatic.........................and you switched to a 5-speed????

Was this an automatic to manual swap maybe?

I doubt the 2001 Explorer and 2003 Ranger connectors would be numbered the same
You would need the Ford "Wiring Diagram book" from shop manual set for 2001 Explorer and 2003 Ranger

Most Libraries have free on-line access to these diagrams, you just need a library card and PIN number to log in, which is free to get at local branch

The Explorers were never wired for manual transmissions after 1998, and in 2003 Rangers had separate wiring harness for manual and automatic, 2001 and earlier Ranger just had 1 harness for all and then an added harness for automatic that plugged into manual harness

So it would not be plug and play, you will need to cut and splice some wiring

Thank RonD for the reply back.

The 2001 Explorer was a Automatic it went bad. So I got the 2003 ranger for the transmission swap to
a 5 speed stander transmission in the Explorer in a strander.

I think it would be better if i know what the old wiring harness was in the Exploere. So i can pinout which wiring was what. The only thing I can find on the PCM plug is "F5SB-14A64-AA" and alos "476 OG31AO a or 476 0G31A0" and the plug is gray.

You need one of these: 2001 Ford Explorer and Sport Trac Wiring Diagram Manual Original

And one of these: 2003 Ford Ranger Wiring Diagram Manual Original

That will have ALL the connections and wire colors on each harness and what they are used for

The Book will have both for Ranger, it covers all models and options

As far as I know the only difference is the transmission control wires won't be there, only sensor in common would be the OSS sensor on rear of either transmission

Just buy the 2003 diagrams on Ebay and then resell them to somebody when you're done with them. Here's a copy for $30 shipped.

Fordzilla80 are you the same guy did a video Ford Ranger Manual Transmission Swap on YouTube
?

Anyway, I have the software (Ford Motor Company Service Information) I know it’s not the book. I just thought it would be the same as the book.
But it show Automatic transmission not a Manual transmission and that's misunderstanding when this is my first time with something this new.

I’m looking for the PCM diagram pinout for a manual transmission only. The only thing am finding is the one for an Automatic transmission pinout.
But I need the manual transmission pinout to the PCM. I just what to know which wires to remove for the Automatic transmission wiring and just add the Manual wiring to my old harness.
So I don’t have to change every wiring.

Here is the wiring harness info I have.

“The wiring harness number out of the Ranger is 12B637 harness and the plug
to the PCM is C175 gray plug.”

Yep, that was me.

I just looked in my copy of the 2003 diagrams, and there is no manual and automatic connector/pinout view. It just shows the PCM pinout as if it was an automatic. You just need to subtract the wires for the automatic and you have the pinout for the manual. The shift solenoids, the TCC solenoid. the EPC solenoid, and some (not all, you need the output shaft speed sensor) of the shaft speed sensors won't be on a manual harness, so you can delete those. The only wiring a manual has for the transmission are two wires for the reverse light switch (same colors/wires go to the transmission range sensor on an automatic), and two wires for the output shaft speed sensor (same colors as automatic) on vehicles so equipped.

Why are you trying to change the harness? I made that video you posted four years ago and as more people have started 5-speed swapping the newer trucks, it's been determined that an automatic computer will work with the original automatic harness, you'll just have to deal with the warning lights and the possible rev limiter (doesn't happen on all trucks, only some).

I did it on a automatic computer and it work good no rev limiter. I had about 6 codes looking for the automatic. I got a truck that was wreak and I thought I could change everything like you did. But in the middle of it. I notices the wiring harness on the donor truck was different. My truck had one wiring harness for everything. But the donor truck had two wiring harness one for the motor and the other wiring harness was for the charging. I would like to keep everything as one and not have a nest of wiring under the hood.

When I watch your video I wanted to do the swap more.

I don't think you need to do anything with the harness like I did. As I've helped a few other people do this swap on their Rangers, it became clear when you use the automatic computer and wiring, you just end up with codes for the missing sensors. Only a few trucks seem to have the limiter. You can try having a tuner who has the software to work with RBV computers delete the inputs for the transmission controls, but that can be pricey and I don't think there are many people knowledgeable enough to do it with these trucks.

If I were in your situation and the truck ran fine the way it is, I wouldn't worry about the harnesses and just enjoy the upgraded driving experience.

I'm glad the video gave you the increased desire to swap your Explorer. Swapping my truck to a manual was the best thing I ever did to it, and will always be my favorite mod.
