Leaking Oil

Ok, so I noticed the other day that I'm leaking oil. Whats the best way to find out where the oil is coming from? I sense somewhere near the rear of it b/c it's been landing on my cat which I now presume is shot b/c I have a horrible shacking now.

Its an '01 4.0 sohc, auto w/almost 116,000 on the ticker.

Thanks.

Clean off any excess oil underneath. Get all the dirt off. Give it a few hours, go back to and look. Look around alot. Start from the lowest point, and work your way up the engine till you see the source.

Thanks for the obvious answer. I know to look but its kinda tough when its raining out right now and oil is everywhere. Was just hoping to get an idea on where to start.

Alright thanks. I'm actually going to be driving home to NJ at roughly 4 in the morning so when I get home I'll clean it up then take a nap and wake up and see what i see.

Well I don't know what other kind of answer you expected. Get as much light on the area as possible, look from top and bottom.

+1. Sure would be nice if the whole problem was a loose drain plug.

If it's that far rearward.. it's usually from either:
The rear main seal
A head gasket
A valve cover gasket.

Valve cover and head gaskets are tough to find if the leak is bad. Oil gets everywhere.

The rear main is pretty easy to pick out because it'll be almost all rearward of the engine.

Also, don't be fooled by where it puddles. Oil "wicks" and can flow quite a distance from the actual source. Same goes for most fluids in a car.
