New to me (pre-safety cert) - 2000 4.0L V6 Coolant drip off tranny (i think)
Hi Everyone,
I just picked up a 2000 Ranger, 4L V6 and it's going in for some exhaust work this week and then a safety inspection. I noticed that i have a coolant leak and it's dripping off the tranny (or near it... not sure what everything is yet by eye-ball). Any thoughts? I can't see anything from the engine bay, only from this view underneath. Thanks!
Two spots but i took the pic after putting the truck up on front ramps so the drip location may have changed. I'm not 100% sure what i'm looking at but this is just behind the engine. It's dripping once every 5 seconds or so. I ran the truck and watch and it doesn't seem to happen much quicker when running.
2000 Ranger 4.0l will be the 4.0l OHV model(1990-2000), 2001 and up Rangers had 4.0l SOHC engine, completely different engine, just FYI when you look for info
On the 4.0l OHV the aluminum lower intake manifold has two pass thrus for coolant to head flow, passenger side front, and drivers side rear.
Your leak looks to be drivers side rear
The heads are cast iron, and when you have liquid flowing thru two different types of metal you can get corrosion, changing "green" coolant every 2years or "red" coolant every 5 years will prevent this corrosion.
The corrosion starts to eat away at the aluminum and gasket material where it meets the cast iron
So check back of the head, drivers side, where lower intake is connected, thats the most likely leak point
Changing lower intake gasket is not that hard just a lot of wrench work
