Are you kidding? I beat the **** out of my ranger every day and it ran like a champ when I sold it at 145k miles. Most of it's like was with 33s, 3.73s and plenty of weight in the back. WOT all the time on road and off. It was noisy at all (marbles in a can) but it ran awesome.
When I worked at the Ford dealership, I saw a lot of old 4.0L OHV rangers come in with well over 200k miles still running strong with no rebuilds, only minimal work like intake gaskets or sensors.

yup thats for sure the spark plugs are a pain but its the extra fuel its pumping in since the motor is cold to get it up to operating temp.

This is a thread from almost 11 years ago and Alex98 hasn't been heard from in over 7 years so I doubt he'll get back to us on this.

Me?, I own a SOHC and have never seen / driven an OHV so I won't vote.
While I too am spooked by easily cracked heads I can't call the SOHC a shoe-in because of the inexcusable feature of having to pull an engine to perform a timing chain replacement.
Truck engines are way more likely to need a timing hardware job than general passenger vehicles.

Q: Is it me or do the heads on the SOHC seem massive (tall)?

I've only owned one ranger, it's a 2001 4.0 sohc. I can't think of anything I'd ask of this truck that it hasn't given me.
