looking for the drain plug that allows me to drain the coolant out in my 4.0L SOHC. cant find it anywhere. anybody know?

 

i dont know if its the same but on mine its on the passanger side towards the back of the radiator

 

Yes, it's on the radiator. If you have the skid plate or the plastic guard you may need to remove it first.

 

thanks gator. thats exactly where it was. had to remove that lower shroud and that had some dirt in it. lol. but yea. fluids drainin now.

new problem. drained everything then put water in to wash everything out. when i put the water in the resevoir it didnt enter the system. so im with my friend who just did his system and everything went smoothly and hes instructing me wut to do. so i start my truck and let it get back to operating temp (which is wut i did before i started the first time) and then turned the truck off and pulled the plug again. this time a lot came out. the first time seemed like maybe a half a gallon to a gallon came out which i thought was low but didnt do anything about it. anyway, when i pulled the plug more coolant came out and this time it took half an hour or more to drain. so this gets done and i put more water in and it still doesnt go down through the system. so ive got the truck running(buddys monitoring everything) temp guage is normal yet the resevoir is still at full and im pretty sure there is no coolant left in the system. did i do anything wrong? i need my truck tomorrow. also i broke the head off of the plug, wut do i do? HELP!! PLEASE!!

 

um you have to add water directly to the radiator im pretty sure, there should be a cap on it. also, if you got an air bubble in the system somewhere it wont take any fluid. the coolant should be flushed with water, there is an inexpensive kit you can get at autozone that just hooks up to your garden hose

 

ive tried to take the cap off and it doesnt come off. it only loosens and pressure releases but it will not come off. is there anything that could have gotten air in the system. i knew if there was a bubble then it would be bad but i thought that would lead to an instant spike. mine runs like normal and i know there is no coolant in there. there is no way that there is.

 

you must PRESS and TURN to get the rad cap off, there are 2 stages, one to vent, and press and turn again one more to remove

 

alright that one worked and i have the cap off. now wut do i do? ive got about a gallon, maybe a little more of water in the resevoir. wut happens next and do i have to drain the system again and start over or just pour the coolant. also, how to get that plug back out now that the head is broken off?

 

the plug in the rad. hmm, will it still hold the water in?? maybe vice grips or something? basically, fill the radiator up to the fill line, should be marked on the side, with a 50/50 mix antifreeze and distilled water. run the truck, let it cool, take off the cap of the rad and check. repeat until the radiator stays full. as far as the reservoir you may have to just straight up drain that, your cooling system wont pull in all that fluid

no prob. honestly, you may want to invest $15 in a haynes manual, it goes over all the basic maintenance stuff like that, but takes you step by step through all the procedures, done on a truck just like yours. ive gotten one for every vehicle i have, and before i do anything, i jsut read through it really quick to make sure i didnt forget anything, or if there is anything special i have to do, BEFORE i start on the job. good luck!!

 

I just drain and fill the radiator every year, that way I don't have to mess with flushing.

 

where can u get one of those manuals?

as far as i know they dont have one yet for the 01 and newer

 

i dont think they have a haynes our for the newest trucks, but the ones for the older ones should contain most of the same info, just nothing on the SOHC. if you really want a manual you can pick up a set of shop manuals, probably on ebay, and im sure there is a link floatin around somewhere here

 

autozone has the updated haynes manual..
its something like 93-05 rangers now.

Dude you're screwed if the head of that broke off. If you can't get it out with vice grips and it's broken inside the radiator take a sharp knife and press it on and spin the knife. If it's stuck you need a radiator.
