Ranger Intermittent starting Problem

Hi Everyone,

My 2004 Ranger 4X4 cuts out sometimes while idling. It then will not start. I have tried starting fluid but it starts and then cuts out. If I leave it alone for 3 or 4 hours then it starts. I had it toed to a garage but by the time they looked at it the truck started. They told me their was nothing wrong. I did replace the fuel pump 6 months ago. Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum

If it restarts with starting fluid but dies then yes you do have a fuel problem.

So the questions are:
Is the new fuel pump failing
or
is the fuel pump power being cut off

In the footwell or rocker panel on the passenger side of the cab you will find the inertia switch.
Google: Ford Ranger inertia switch images
So you can see what to look for.

The fuel pumps power pass thru this switch, it is there to cut power to pump in case of an accident or rollover, it has a weight inside that will break the power connection if it is moved too quickly, i.e. sudden stop(accident) or rollover.

This is not your problem but.............you can hook up a test light to this switch and leave it hooked up for a few days.
When engine stalls and light stays on you will know the problem is the new pump.
If light goes out and then engine stalls you will know power is being cut, so fuel pump relay or computer issue.
Just FYI fuel pump only gets power for 2 seconds when key is turned on, then light will get dim, 5-7volts, after engine starts then fuel pump power will come on again and stay on until engine is shut off.

Who diagnosed the bad fuel pump 6 months ago?

What brand is the new fuel pump?
If not Motorcraft then I would suspect new pump is failing, 6 to 18months is the average for "less expensive" fuel pumps.
They will replace it under warranty and the next one may last longer, just luck of the draw
