I've managed to get as high as 23mpg on a long trip (about 600 miles, only stopped for gas once). It was during the summer and I had the cruise set at 75mph and wasn't running the A/C as it wasn't that hot out.
Most of the time with daily driving I average about 18 - 20 mpg depending on how hard I drive.
I have no performance mods done, the only thing I can think of that may be helping get good mileage is that I change my air filter twice a year and I run some fuel injector cleaner in a tank of gas every few months.

Also, 2wd trucks get better gas mileage than 4wd trucks...

Fuel consumption is all about load. Lugging and engine in 5th gear at 60% load will use more fuel than going down to 4th and running 30% load up the grade.
So.. given a good driver.. this is a true statement. I'd suppose the typical 4x4 ranger driver only see's green and red pedals.

Mines still getting better using 93 shell. It has been warming up a little too.. which has to be a factor to *some* measure. Temps have been in the 20s-30s lately during the times I drive.
I did'nt take that road trip yet but will on the 24th. I did fill up sat @ 349.8 miles and 18.776 gallons. That's 18.63mpg on my 4x4 w/4.10s! Interestingly I have been a little harder on it this week than I usually am. I had a good 5-6 WOT 0-60 blasts during the week.
I'm really itching to get a tune and get this thing up over 20mpg for daily driving. I just don't have the money right now.

I have an 02 ranger with 22's with 305/40/22 tires with demon coil pack and dual exhaust and a drop in K&N filter, and a Jet SuperChip. I recently drove from the nashville, TN area to Lawton, Oklahoma...I got around 19 and some change but when im at home I get 16.5-17MPG but I drive it like a truck.

If I could get this up to 20mpg I could go a full 5 days in between fill ups. And that would be a nice change of pace. Not to mention saving me money in the long term.

My $.02
I just took a long trip recently. I went from Millington Tn (Memphis) to Henderson Nc (north of Raleigh/ Durham actually almost Virginia on I85.
Filled up the day before and drove to and from work 60-70 miles and then ran all over the place taking care of the goodies and stuff before I left. I drove I-40 to I-81. Then 81 comes together with I-77 and I took 77 towards Charlotte. Then I took I-52 towards Winston-Salem where I caught 40 again. Then when 40 came together with I-85 I took 85 north to Henderson.
During this trip I went from about 275 feet above sea level in Memphis and got as high as about 1700 feet in Tennessee and then saw almost 3000 in Virginia on I-77 or in North Carolina I cant remember which.
Additionally my speed was not Sunday Driver like. The fastest I have mead this trip was about 13 and half-hours in a 2.3 ranger that was very heavily effected by the terrain. I made this trip in 11 and a half hours very seldom running less than 10 MPH more than the speed limit. According to the GPS I had an average speed of 55mph including the stops for gas and relieving bodily fluids (3 stops)
The truck has the following, K&N stock replacement panel filter, Silencer removed, and a Gibson extreme duel exhaust. The rest of the truck is stock or at least close. 4.0 Extended cab, short bed, 2 wheel drive, 3.55L rear gear, 235-75/16 tires, filled to 35PSI cold, Edge Package with what I am told is the Factory 2” blocks in the rear with the 2” torsion bar lift in the front. Oh it has a 5 speed trans.
I drove more than 400 miles on the 1st tank. (Millington to Just south of Bristol Tn) I got about 425 miles on just over 17 gallons for a MPG of about (423/17.4) for just over 24 MPG (to be exact a 24.285714285714285714285174MPG). She second tank I got 460 miles on just over 19 gallons. 19.3 to be exact filled clear to the top of the filler neck in a truck that is billed as having a 19.5 gallon tank (per the 2004 Ranger Post 2002 format Owners Guide page 227) for just over 23 MPG (to be exact a 23.5897435897435897435MPG). All this with the air conditioner on!
I never would have gotten that in my supposed more economic 2.3. To be completely honest I believe I would have gotten more than 30 mpg in the 4.0 on the same route that I got 30 iin the 2.3L.
