Welcome to the forum
Always helpful to include the year of Ranger in your posts.
You most likely removed the shifter when transmission wasn't in NEUTRAL
You need to pull out the shifter again and then look down inside trans
You will see 3 shift rails and each has a Slot
These 3 slots need to be lined up in the Center of the hole and thats NEUTRAL
BLOCK THE WHEELS
Then use a screw driver to move the one slot that is not in the center, back to the center
If there is weight on the rear wheels, holding vehicle from rolling, you may have to rock the vehicle to release it from the Gear it is in now to get it to Center position
Then reinstall shifter
What you have done is VERY VERY Common, lol, been there done that myself
You probably have an M5OD-R1 transmission, 1988 to 2011 Rangers used these, there were TWO different shift arms used, so you may have gotten the older or newer version, but not the same version as yours
