It's the tan/yellow stripe wire on connector C214 pin 15
On a V6 engine also check connector C216 pin 8, black/yellow stripe wire that's the ground for the tachometer, tach reading will change to 4cyl mode if its loose
Just in general its most likely the tachometer itself, not the signal
You can use a 1996 to 2003 Ranger cluster in your 2000 Ranger, or from a Mazda B-series, same years, plug and play
If you pull out a clusters or replace one, ALWAYS replace the 6 back light bulbs, they are cheap and a pain to replace when 1 or 2 burn out, lol
