I am working on a 1986 single cab 4x4. It came with a 1.9l and a Mitsubishi FM145 manual transmission I need to replace the engine but want something possibly larger but most importantly carbureted. Does anyone know what other engines will bolt it with that transmission?

2.9l Maybe ?

If so then no, only other engine that would fit that transmission, with more power, is the 4.0l OHV and no carb or distributors for those, well Morana Racing has a carb conversion adapter for $995, but still no distributor because lower intake is in the way
2.8l had carb and distributor, but less power than the 2.9l
2.8l had 115HP
2.9l had 140HP
4.0l OHV 160HP

302(5.0l) V8 has the power(200+ HP) and lots of carb and distributor options, but need a different transmission, and drive shaft

 

So upon further disassembly I’m thinking the 4.0 would be the rite I’d go as long as I can bolt it in as the mount locations are and the trans but what year 4.0 should I be looking for?

 

1990-1994 will be the easiest computer and wiring to work with
