1991 2.9 to 5.0 swap

Hey y’all! I have a 1991 xlt 4x4 with the 2.9 engine and manual trans. My engine is nearing 300000kms and I want some more power so I am looking to do a 5.0 swap. I found a 1992 f150 with the fuel injected 5.0, manual transmission, and 4x4. I am wondering if I’ll be able to fit the f150 transfer case and transmission onto the ranger or will it be too big? And if so, where would I be able to source one of the right size? Any help about this or anything else I should know about the swap would be greatly appreciated!! :)

Welcome to the forum

Yes, transfer case will fit but you will need to offset the engine/trans mounts over about 1/2", and "maybe" notch the frame rail

The 1992 manual trans will need a custom bent shifter as it sits farther forward and will hit the ranger dash

The upper intake on the F-150 5.0l's might be a bit too tall so a body lift or an Explorer 5.0l intake may be needed

General V8 swap info seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...versions.shtml

Is there a transmission I could source so I wouldn’t have to make a bent shift ****?

The M5OD-R2(M5R2) from an F-150 with 4.2l V6 will have shifter at the same place as Ranger's M5R1
These were used from 1996 to 2003 in 2wd and 4x4 F-150s, you want the 4x4 version of course

4.2l V6 and 5.0l(302) V8 share the same bolt pattern, Windsor small block pattern
You will need to drill out the bolt holes on the bell housing, about 1/16" so not much, because 4.2l used Metric bolt size, 5.0l used SAE size

Can I use my old M5R1 driveshaft or do I need a new one?
