3.0 to 5.0

Recently got a 2008 ranger with 3.0 2WD. 191,000 miles. However I'm not liking how sluggish it feels and looking at the stock HP of 182. I've realized eventually I want to do the 5.0 swap but all the post I see explain using a donor explorer. What's the difficulty of doing the swap without a donor? I was looking at a remanufactured transmission (2001 explorer) and remanufactured engine. Would it be better to go to a salvage yard? I'm looking for reliability and slightly worried about a salvaged engine and transmission. Any help or input appreciated

Thanks

Welcome to the forum

There are a few extra issues when swapping to different size engines on the 2004 and up Rangers as they used digital dash which is "married" to the engine computer, part of anti-theft system and also so lower mile odometers could not be swapped in

Ranger engine bay is small and low, the Explorer 302/5.0l engine was 27.5" long, 19" wide and 21" tall, and it barely fits
So look at engine dimensions for your choice on possible swaps

The width is the bigger deal, 20+ inches mean you are losing AC and moving the steering shaft
Newer V8s are 25+ inches wide, some are 30", i.e. 90deg block with overhead cams

So reason for explorer V8 swap was size and it has the lower profile intake to fit in explorer/ranger engine bay
Also wiring match up with 1995-2003 Ranger was close to the same

The 4.0l SOHC Rangers, 2001-2011 had 207HP, Explorer V8 was 215HP
While a V8 swap would be more sexy, lol, selling your 3.0l Ranger and getting a 4.0l Ranger would be more cost effective to get the extra power
An no, swapping in a 4.0l SOHC would be same work as V8 swap because changing engine size requires the same work and electrical issues

Just FYI
The 2008 3.0l Ranger just has 148HP, and best torque/power at 3,900RPM, so they suck with an automatic unless you hold them in a lower gear to get RPMs up higher
You may have been looking at 3.0l DOHC engine specs, totally different engine
3.0l OHV Vulcan was designed as a HIGH RPM engine back in 1986
Most engines make best torque/power at 2,500-2,900rpm, so..............if you drive it like "most engines" power will be limited, they were nick named 3.slow because of this misunderstanding in how they work
"Drive it like a rented mule", high RPMs is what it likes and NEEDS to get any power out of it
