1992 ford
1992 ford
I have a 1992 ford ranger with the 2.3 4 cylinder engine. I have always wanted to do a 4 cylinder to v8 engine swap. I like the idea of having fuel injection and was wanting to get some insight on doing a 5.0 swap. My truck is 2 wheel drive so there is unlimited possibilities from what I was told. I'm wanting a daily driver as well. Stock is good with me. Just wanting more horse power plus keep the versatility. All info on how to make this happen is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You want to buy a 1996-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer with V8 and 2wd if possible, that will get you 95% of the parts you will need
You need engine/transmission, computer and engine wiring harness, exhaust system and radiator
You can use the rear axle as well, its an 8.8", you probably have a 7.5" now
It will be an automatic, no Explorer V8 manuals were ever made
Earlier year 302/5.0l V8s with fuel injection, have very tall upper intakes and don't fit under the hood of a Ranger
The 302/5.0l OHV V8 is only 20" wide so fits in a Ranger, other V8s are 26-30" wide so do not fit
Loads of how-tos on swapping in an explorer V8 into a Ranger

I'm not for sure if they made the ford explorer with the 5.0 that is two wheel drive only. Since my truck is two wheel drive in will need a transmission that will hold up. I know the stock transmission will not bolt up to anything but the 2.3 and it will not hold up to the 5.0. What is everyone suggesting for a good transmission.
The 1996-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0l V8s came with the 4R70W, 4-speed automatic, they for sure came in 2WD versions, but also optional AWD(no low range)
Same engine(5.0l) and transmission(4R70W) combo can be found in a few model Fords
1993–1996 Lincoln Mark VIII
1994–1996 Ford Thunderbird
1995–1996 Ford Crown Victoria
1993–1996 Lincoln Town Car
1994–1996 Mercury Cougar
These would, of course, all be 2WD 4R70W
1996 was last model year for the 302/5.0l V8, except for the Explorer/Mountaineer
In 1997 Ford switch to the Modular V8s that have a different bolt pattern
The 1996-2001 Explorer computer will expect to see a 4R70W solenoid pack, computer doesn't care about 2WD or 4WD, just the transmission model
