So I got a 2002 Ranger coming to me with a bad engine. It is 4wd. My friend also has a 04 explorer v8. I am a professional mechanic and I own software through SCT so tuning computers not an issue. However, I've been out of this type thing for about 10 years so general info will help. I'm assuming mechanically I wont have issues with fitting engine over. I assume I'll need to swap trans as well. Bell housing different? I assume. I will either add injector and coil wires or swap engine harness too. Any info be helpful. I've wanted a v8 ranger since I was 18. I'm 45 now. Holy **** I'm getting to old for this. . Nah !!! Anyways thanks for any and all input. I'll try to attach pics of ranger here if I can figure out how...
You will have an issue fitting the 2004 V8(4.6l SOHC) into the Ranger engine bay
The 1996-2001 Explorers used the 5.0l OHV V8 engines which are 19" wide, and these barely fit between steering shaft and heater box, even have to use remote oil filter to clear the frame rail
The 4.6l SOHC engine is 28" wide so you need at least 5 more inches on each side which just are not there
The 4.6L SOHC is also 6" taller than 5.0l OHV so BIG body lift would be needed
"Can" you do it, sure anything is possible, but in this case not sure it would be worth it, have to off-set steering and delete the heater, and extend quite a few wires for the 5" body lift
Just replace what ever engine is in there now, or look for a 1996-2001 Explorer 5.0l V8 4WD model for this swap

Agreed! I'm not into the 4.6 that much anyways. I want a stock looking ride too. I thank you for your input. I knew you guys would help !!!
So I found a 97 explorer 5.0 liter ALL WHEEL drive. Is this a suitable donor? Or no. I'm not sure if the 5.0 will bolt to existing ranger trans. Or can I use ranger transfer case onto explorer trans? Thanks for your help
Please just post questions in the forum
No, no Ranger transmission can't bolt to any V8 engine, and the Ranger BW1354 transfer case is a bit small to use with V8 power, but there are adapters for it
An AWD Explorer will have a useable 4WD automatic transmission, but an AWD transfer case, you can switch to a BW4406 4WD transfer case instead of the AWD model, and Ranger electric shift 4WD system can control it, 2H, 4H, and 4L, same as it did the BW1354
1997 Explorer also doesn't have PATS in its computer so one less thing to deal with
So Im finishing up my Ranger build. Does anyone have the c115 connector pinout for 99 explorer and 02 Ranger? 4" Lift ,17"Rims, 4 wheel disk brake upgrade, Advanced adapters kit on 4r70w trans 5.0 conversion.
