302 swap, but i have emissions test (Arizona)
Thats all that holds me back. i live in the greater Phoenix area. Can't get "Historical" plades as the Rangers are not aged enough to meet the classifications (no emissions test required). The only other thought is "Collector" car insurance (havn't called yet.). OB! (pre 96) is done with the hood up and on rollars. OB2 is 1996 & later. and they generally just plug into your port .... All is well if no check engine light comes on in either case. Has anyone managed to get a 302 Ranger swap thru Az. emissions??????. I know that some register their vehicle to a County with no emission checks but that would be my last resort and something I really don't want to do....

Yes, If you qualify for Collector Cars status then you are OK, yes, yearly miles is a BIG DEAL that's how you can qualify and not need emission test
You have a Custom build, a none stock engine, so it is no longer a "ranger", they may want you to get a new title since VIN no longer matches vehicle, a Salvaged title or reconstructed Title
8th digit in the VIN is engine size.................yours won't match
In Calif. you have to get a whole vehicle inspection, frame, brakes, general road worthiness, not a cheap inspection, and THEN it also has to pass smog tests
If they allow you to smog it then it will need to pass emissions standards for the year of the engine, so have any documentation for where you got the engine and its year available

If you own property outside of Maricopa county you should be fine and just register the truck there. You can still pass emissions even if you swap the 302 az emissions are easy. Just make sure the engine is fuel injected and obd2 port works. If the truck had a carb to begin with then a carb will work fine or fuel injection. They shouldn't give you a hard time about it.
They go off the test numbers of your vehicle when it was new so if you swap a clean/cleaner burning engine in even on rollers it will pass.
I remember doing a ls swap in a jeep they failed it because the obd2 port didnt work that's the only reason why. we wired one in waited until the cpu set its readiness for emissions and passed with flying colors. There is s shop out in Mesa called prk automotive they do alot of swaps you could contact them for further questions.

I live in Riverside County, from what I have been told by local shops, there is no way to swap an engine without FIRST confirming the swap through the DMV. If you do the swap first then go for an exemption you may not get it.
As I have stated before, "If your vehicle meets the emissions standards of the year of the body, then it should be allowed" ! WTF man... !
