You need to get M5OD-R2 trans from an F-150 '97-'01 with 4.6l V8, it has same bellhousing pattern as 5.0l

The shifter is only 1 or 2" back from Ranger M5OD-R1 on those years, earlier R2's had shifter much farther forward.

I have seen it done with the complete Mustang setup, the 5.0 and T5. You have to fab a custom shifter up and make a hole farther back than normal. But this is no problem if you have bucket seats. It may involve some cross brace mods but if you can weld or know a welder it's no big deal. The other thing you will have to do is either convert the trans to a hydraulic type clutch via a hydro throw out bearing. Or set the ranger up with the fork and cable.

No prob, I didn't do my present swap but have swapped a few S10's. The Ford is a little more complex unless your doing an LS into the S10 with FI then it's about the same. The truck I mentioned earlier with all the mustang parts is all over YouTube and I also have a friend with the same setup but he made his own shifter. If I were going to try and keep a 5 speed behind a 5.0 or 351 I would definitely go with a T5 or T6 though. A stout 302 will bust a tranny that was designed for 4-6 cylinders. Ask me how I know.

I could be wrong but I think all the 5 speeds in the Rangers after 92 were of Mazda origin so they were never made to hold up to V8 torque or HP. Just wanted to share that. I am sure you can google your truck and find out exact specs.

Yes, Mazda M5OD-R1 were used in Rangers from 1988 until engine of production
In 2001 Rangers got the 207HP 4.0l SOHC engine and those got the slightly beefer(extra hole in bell housing, lol) M5OD-R1HD, but even if you wanted to take a chance on one of these the bolt pattern wouldn't work for 5.0l.

M5OD-R2 was much beefer/bigger and used in F-series for many years and did come with 5.0l bolt pattern.
