'87 5.0
Hi. New to the forum because I just got a work in progress - '87 4x2 with fresh '86 5.0, FMX tranny and original 7.5" rear end. A good start, and I have some questions you all have probably heard before:
1. What should I use for front springs? The old 4 cylinder springs are squashed. Been reading about straight swaps with Explorer springs but this is a twin I-beam axel so I'm not sure
2. Best rear end to put in with least work? 8.8 is the obvious choice but I would like to avoid cutting and welding if possible
Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

1983 to 1997 Ranger 8.8" will be plug and play, same width
No need for explorer rear end
The 4.0l ranger engine weighs in a few pound more than the explorer V8, ranger 2WD used twin I-beam thru 1997 model year
So a set of coils from 1990 - 1997 4.0l ranger will be good, and 4.0l engine came with 8.8" axle
And look here for axle tags and door codes: Ford 7.5 & 8.8 Inch Axle Tag & Door Codes
It would be nice to get a positraction rear axle, Ford called it Trac Lok, all are called L/S, Limited slip
Also get the ratio you want
