Basically a V8 in your truck wont be legal. First you would have to use a 4.6 not a 5.0 since the 5.0s were replaced in 2001??? by the 4.6. Why does this matter? You need the same year or newer engine for the truck it's going into. Next it has to come from the same class of vehicle. I don't think the Exploder and the Ranger are in the same class.
On the other hand you could do it if you have a place that will pass your car. There are no more smog referees in California since the budget cuts.

currently the state ref program has been suspended due to the states budget crisis ... so you have no way of getting it legailzed ... but to get it done you would need an engine that is the same year or newer than your truck, and to hook up all the smog equipment right
california sucks for swaps ... this is the reason im driving an "RBV" now instead of the hondas which im so fond of.
