Choosing and Audio System

I have a 2004 Reg Cab with 2 stock speakers in the doors. I want an aftermarket head unit and an upgrade to a 4 speaker system...I don't want to do any subs. I don't want junk, but I don't want anything outrageously expensive....

Is it true to say that going with a better quality speaker, is better than a crappy speaker through a good head unit? (Food for Thought)

What is a good head for the money, with some good sound quality that won't break the budget?

What is the best quality speakers for the money?

I want something good, but don't want to get over my head in cost.

What' size speakers fit in my truck? Should I put the same size speaker throughout?

I need to Ipod accessibility, a CD player, other options are nice, but not necessary.

I'm do not stereotype by brand .

Any and all help is appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Some good speakers are the Infinity Kappa 682.9cf. I have them in all for corners of my extended cab, they sound great and have great mids and highs. The cool thing is that the tweeter can be turned to adjust the sound upward or toward the center of the cab as well as having the option to -3db with the little button thats on the tweater. I run them and so do a bunch of other people on here. You can find them at this website for 80 bucks:

Great reviews on Pioneer TS-A6882R 6" x 8" 4-Way 280-Watt Speakers (prices good too!).....Amazon.com: Pioneer TS-A6882R 6" x 8" 4-Way 280-Watt Speakers: Electronics

To maximize your dollars, I would keep stock HU and get these two speakers first...later add a cheap equalizer/booster ... then add two rear 4 way Pioneers....save up for a new double DIN HU....then add a sub.

I just purchased the Panasonic CQ-5800U head unit this morning for about $140 all said and done from these guys Panasonic CQ-5800U (cq5800u) All In-Dash Car Stereo Receivers Car Stereo Receivers and Head Units Car Audio Car Audio, Video, & GPS Navigation - Sonic Electronix
It has the I pod hookup which is all I was after and it is not to flashy and will blend perfectly with my dash as all of the buttons and face are back lit green just like everything else in the truck. Hopefully I will have it installed later this week once it arrives. I will post pictures and give my thoughts on the unit shortly after.

I should also add that while researching this unit via customer reviews (got a 4.8 out of 5) it was mentioned by a few customers that the unit noticeably improved the sound quality of the stock speakers. Guess I will know in a few days, but I think it safe to say that even if I had to drop some more money on new speakers this will buy no means break the bank.

New head unit and tweeters will do the trick. No need for speakers. Then save up for a sub.

I am in the same boat, I hate single din decks and wanted something that looked like it was stock but would also let me hook up my pod without having to use a FM transmitter or a tape deck adapter. I saw this unit and it was everything I wanted. It looks like a stock unit, it is a double din and it has a auxiliary input for the I pod. The best part has to be the price though

I will post my thoughts once it arrives.

We will see, I bought this unit for the I pod connection and because it maintains the stock look. I was never dissatisfied by the stock system regarding sound, but if I can get a noticeable improvement in sound quality for a little extra it might be worth exploring. I will see how the system preforms with just the head unit first and then decide.
