Hi there....I was glad I found this newsgroup as I bought a 2009 Ford Ranger Extended Cab with the 4.0L engine and auto tranny. I love the truck but the one thing that bugs me is the stereo. I am going to start by replacing the speakers. I found some Pioneer TS-G6842R online at Crutchfield. I do have a limited budget so they fall in with my budget I have for the speakers. Anyone bought or know of anyone that has? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Also, anyone know the make of the stereos that they put in Ford and what are the specs for the unit. I am going to replace it down the road but can only do one thing at a time....thanks.

I was driving around the other day and kinda had the same thought.

I want to upgrade my speakers so the sound is better.

Years ago I was talking to someone and thay said that the stock/factory radios are not to shabby and that the weak point in the stock system is the speakers. He said that just upgrading the speakers is a huge improvement.

Any truth to this?

Any other decent speakers to go with beside's the Poineer's mentioned.

I can install radios and speakers as well as wire them but when it comes to brands and deciding I am about clueless. Fact in point, a buddy likes Alpine. So when the display went on the radio in my car I bought a $200 Alpine head unit with MP3 and Ipod capabilities.

OK Answer Man, I'm no audio genius either (I'm a diesel mechanic) but I'm curious too. From your sig I decode it to mean you've got Phoenix Gold 5x7s in the back and Poenix Gold 6x5s in the front with separate remote mount tweeters for both, right.

I'd be keeping my stock head unit and just upgrading speakers. Correct me if I'm wrong 'cause I don't want to spend the $$$ and find out they don't fit or something.

AND, you'd better be right . . . . or else I'll have to throw a wrench at you . . . lol.

my kenwood stereo sounds better then my stock stereo with my stock speakers. used to have to 12 in subs with my stock speakers and it sounded amazing. my sony explode 6x9s i used to have were better but richt now i just have my stocl speakers with a good stereo and it sounds alot better then stock

 

the OEM cd6 sounds good, add an iPod adapter and it wakes up that radio to a new level, going back to the standard broadcast stations is not an option.
I will need to get more info I don’t like doing something twice or wasting money.

 

i would go with infinity speakers. kinda pricey but they're great from what i heard and yes, stock speakers suck lol.

 

they are 6.5" round up front not 6x5" and 5x7" in back. the fronts are components which have a seperate crossover and tweeter, and the 5x7s are coaxil.

Infinity's are the way to go. Top notch speakers. Try Amazon to get them at a lesser price. Even still. I bet you they will out last most any other speaker out there.

 

I too am not an audio person, i just like to listen.
I recently got a pair of Front Speakers in a 5x7 case, two speakers a teeter and a mid ranger (the ones I installed upside down) out of an ’01 Ex-Sport that had the Pioneer System in it.
Along with a Spec-USA iPod Adapter and the sound is great, at least for my tin ear, the wife and daughter like it.

The regular radio is OK but the station I like to listen to is too far away for good reception.

I still have the Pioneer CD-6 Radio if anyone is interested.

 

Infinity Reference speakers will sound much better than stock and they are not too expensive.

 

A 6.5” round speaker will fit in the front door hole ?
Isn’t the OEM a 5x7 ?

 

Buy a good set of components... do not waste money on rear speakers. many people just run them for loudness reasons or because they don't know better. It destroys the sound stage and the money is better spent else where.

^ All well respected sets.. don't knock the phoenix golds... they are suppose to have amazing mid bass and are dirt cheap! great starter set.

I had the infinity refs they do sound great but need lots of power to hit the mid-range/bass good. they also get very loud without "breaking up" the tweets tend to sound "bright" but overall do sound rather well.

6.5's fit in the stock 5x7/6x8 opening you just need to buy adapter plates or make your own baffle.

 

What do you do cut the door panel to fit the new baffle ?

 

there isn't anything to cut. you mount the baffle to the factory location using the same fasteners then mount your component mid-range to the baffle. the speaker tapers back so the thickness of the baffle takes care of the slight size difference. typically you would make them out of 1/2 to 3/4" MDF board.

the pioneer comps come with adapters for ford vehicles.. or you can buy adapters from scosche or make some nice mdf ones and rubberize them.
