What is that Black Box under dash 1992 Ranger
Hello Ryan & Fellow Members,
I am Arthur Netteler, 70yo Retired Auto Dealership Owner in St. Louis. Retired by "Chrysler" in April 1990, from the AMC/JEEP/RENAULT Dealership I bought in 1983. Seems "Chrysler" did not like the Idea of the "AMC/JEEP/RENAULT" Signage and Billboard we still had up on Lindbergh Highway outside of St. Louis... hahaha.. Life went on... Wife & I are General Managers of a Motel Chain in South/West Texas today. After being called out of 8 1/2 years Retirement in the South Pacific Islands in September 2017.. Tough Job, but someone had to come!
Anyway, thank you for accepting us into your Forum. I purchased a 1992 Ford Ranger XLT (Reg. Cab) 3.0L 4x2 5-Speed, in May 2019. Just a little PM & TLC, I now have a GREAT little PU that EVERYTHING WORKS, for the Motel. All the updates TLC it needed wife and I did, as I LOVE to rehab Vehicles from Motorcycles to Commercial Trucks as my Hobby. More on this later..
Today I have a question for you all... Last month (February 2023) I was pointed to a 1992 Explorer XLT 4Dr 4x2 for $750.. I could not resist being it was the same Truck as my Ranger. The Auto Trans was bad (run with out Fluid), Local Trans Shop swapped out with Salvage One (Guaranteed) for a total of $1,650. So I now have $2,550 Total in it (needed Ft Brakes & Calipers also). All of the Radio is gone, as well the Ashtray. Figure they had some goofy Radio and Amp installed in the Dash (I am a BONE STOCK, AS IT WAS BUILT MECHANIC). I have the Proper Radio/Cassette it came with... BUT.. There is something missing under the Dash. There is a 7 Wire Gray Plug that is just hanging out from under the Dash? I can not find ANYWHERE what this goes to. My Ranger has that same Plug and it is plugged into a 4"x6"x1" Black Box. That is mounted with 2 screws BEHIND the Ashtray! Anyone know what this is/was? I have pictures of the Wire hanging on the Explorer, and of it plugged into the Black Box on my Ranger.. #1 is the Explorer, #2 is the Ranger (plugged into that Box?), #3 is a picture of an Explorer Dash I found with the Box? highlighted.
Thank you for reading my Post, and any help you can provide.. Also where can I find one of those Black Boxes?
