guys, i have a buddy of mine with a 05 ranger 4 cyl. and when he jumps in his truck it will not start no matter how long he holds the key upon initial try. but when he turns the key off and turns it back to start it fires up.. any idea what this could be? he has brought it to a shop and they "fix" it. so the first time he uses it, its fine but after that. same dam thing. what do you suggest? anyone else have this problem?

When he first turns the key what happens? Nothing or engine cranks over without catching?

What did the shop do to "fix" it?

 

Either fuel filter or fuel pump relay going bad ,assuming the engine is turning over.

 

Crank sensor?

If you were plugged into a scan tool and could read the data stream it would probably help to know if injectors were working or if you were getting an RPM count while cranking.
