2003 ranger no fuel pressure but starts

hi guys,

my my truck takes a few seconds to start (cold or hot) and after that runs fine but with very low mpg by the way. With the engine off I checked the pressure at the rail and there’s no pressure, even after priming it. I press the valve and no gas comes out. I crank it and starts after 2 seconds and if I press the valve Gas do come out. I haven’t check the pressure yet while the engine is running but does this looks like a bad pump?

let me know what you think

thanks

Change fuel filter first it should be a 3 fuel line model so has a Check Valve inside and could be the problem.

1998 and up Rangers use 55psi fuel pressure

Is there a puff of grey or blackish smoke on startup?
Indicating a leaking injector or Damper

Not related to your problem but upstream O2 sensor, closest to engine, lasts 100-125k miles then needs to be replaced or MPG will go down

I forgot to mention that the filter was replaced a month ago and I did the upstream o2 sensor this morning. There’s no smoke at all coming out of the pipe. I was reading that could be the check valve in the fuel pump. Do you think that could be the problem? If so, can it be replaced or it’ll be better to replace the whole assembly at once?

let me know and thanks for your advice

Check valve is a flap inside the pump so not a separate part, and no I wouldn't replace fuel pump unless you lose power at higher RPMs and engine load
But up to you

Yeah, sucks it’s inside the pump. I bought the truck to learn more about cars, don’t drive it much. So I think I’ll replace the whole assembly for the learning experience. Specially it has 158k miles and I don’t know if it was ever replaced.

thanks for your advice and I’ll post if replacing it fixed the starting issue!

Removing the bed is the easier method for fuel pump replacement
6 bolts in the bed and then 3 screws in the filler tube
Also unplug the tail lights.

You can do it alone or enlist the help of a couple of friends

Dropping the tank is doable in shop on the lift with transmission jack to hold the tank.
Problem with this method is the wiring and hoses on the top of the tank, they are not made to be lowered with the tank, so you have to drop the tank down a few inches and then try to get your hand in there to disconnect or reconnect everything, not an easy thing to do because you can't really see much, lol.

Loads of videos on pulling or tilting up the Ranger beds to replace fuel pumps

Yeah, thanks for the heads up. I’ll lift the bed!

For whoever has the same issue, replacing the pump fixed my problem. It was indeed the valve the hold pressure when you turn the truck off, I think it’s called check valve. With new pump starts in half a second. Thanks for all the advice here!
