New Member-New 2006 Ranger Problem after long t problem after long hard trip

Hey folks,
Got myself a nice little 2006 Ford ranger 3 L V6. Just took it on a 1200 km trip,In Bc up and down very big mountains and towards the middle of the trip, while using the cruise control, the overdrive was malfunctioning. I was lucky enough to figure that out. I had a cooler in the backseat that had a leaky valve, water in the pins I assumed after doing some research. To be on the safe side I didn’t use the overdrive until the end of the trip and it seem to function after I had dried it. Sorry for the long story LOL ( Typical woman) But I wanted to make sure that that wasn’t in fact the problem. The last stop on the way home after sitting for about an hour eating lunch the truck did not want to start I pump the gas a couple times and after several tries it did start. I was then researching about turning the car to the on position four times before starting the truck which means you have a leak somewhere check valve possibly. Well I’m thinking after reading some of your posts that I pushed a lot of gas through a fuel filter that I don’t know when was it was changed because as I said I just bought the truck. I used to work on cars when I was a young woman and I could take one apart and put it back together but now I have some timers and I’m mixing everything up and I’m wondering if there’s even a check valve inside a fuel filter. LOL I’m also restoring an 1100 shadow through YouTube. Yikes! You’re going to read about me in the newspaper woman goes postal at Lordco lol
your thoughts?

Welcome to the forum

There are some under seat connectors that could be effected by moisture in the cabs floor, but haven't heard about that since the 2001 Rangers?

Fuel injection requires a minimum pressure to force fuel out of the fuel injectors
1998 and up Rangers use a Returnless fuel system, that runs at 55psi pressure
When engine is off that pressure should hold above 30psi...................for months and months

This pressure is held by fuel injectors being closed, check valve on fuel pump being closed, and pressure regulator valve being closed

The fuel pump check valve and pressure regulator are IN the gas tank
Check valve is part of the fuel pump, basically a flap that is pushed open when pump is on and closes when pump is off

Pressure regulator is a separate piece, but part of the fuel pump assembly
The fuel filter will have 3 hoses attached
IN from pump and OUT to engine, like any fuel filter
Then a "Return hose" that runs back to gas tank and connects to the pressure regulator in the tank, so no check valve in fuel filter
This pressure regulator keeps pressure under 65psi

For safety reasons the engine computer will only run the fuel pump for 2 seconds when you turn the key on
But it does this EACH TIME you turn the key from off to on
2 seconds increase fuel pressure by approx. 10psi
So if pressure was leaking down when engine is off cycling the key on and off a few times should build it back up

Once engine RPMs are above 400, computer will turn on fuel pump full time

If cycling the key on and off gets engine started faster then yes, you are losing pressure when key is off
You can test fuel pressure with a gauge attached to engine, there is a test port
Also make sure you do not smell gas anywhere

If you are NOT losing pressure, then your fuel pump could be failing, electric motors failure mode is not starting up when given power, once they are running they won't just stop, so startup is when they fail, repeated key on and off might get a failing pump to startup.
So not quite a cut and dry situation, lol.

BUT replacing the fuel pump assemble changes all the parts

Easiest way is to lift the bed or slide it back

Dropping the gas tank without benefit of a lift and transmission jack to hold the tank is the hard way
Getting it back in and hooking up the hoses at the top is the very hard part, lol

Bed has 6 torx 55 bolts, then 3 phillips screws on the Filler

You can put back in the 2 rear torx bolts, loosely
Then lift up on the front of the bed and prop it up with 2x4 or ???

Or you can disconnect the tail light wiring and slide the bed back 2 feet or so

Thanks for the info Ron D. OK so the bed way is the way to go. Oh yee Haw and I have a canopy on top. Lol this ought to be good for a chuckle. Let’s see, 59 years old, rheumatoid arthritis in my hands, gave myself a horn just changing the oil before the trip. My forehead still hurts. Should I be attempting this myself? I should make a video and then I can post it on YouTube on what not to do.

Maybe I missed something? But , I never read where Rond said u need to replace the fuel pump....For the love of god, please don’t just throw parts at it...go rent a fuel pressure tester and go from there...u could save a lot of $$$$$

Oh yes I was going to find someone with a tester first. The only way I throw money at parts is if it is something in the fuel pump assembly like a check valve or something just replace the whole assembly and be done with it. I’m on disability that’s why am doing it myself. I will go off half cocked sometimes forgetting about something so thanks for the reminder lol

Long hard trip

Hey guys and gals
Well it’s getting close to the end of the month so I was doing more research and lo and behold someone said to check the dipstick for a gas smell. I discovered this while waiting for a friend at the store, I had already driven into town. The last time I checked the oil which was about a week ago I never noticed an Gas smell at all and the oil which I had changed before going to Alberta was a little bit coloured rather than the clear I had put in. I attributed it to the trip. I checked the oil today after going into town yesterday and the oil is considerably darker and definitely smells like gas. If it was a warped cylinder from the heart trip correct me if I’m wrong would it not leak the same amount of gas each time I drove it. I had driven it a few times after I got back and as I said the last time I checked the oil there was no gas smell that I noticed this time it was really noticeable. Regulator? More likely? And the very last question I have is can I limpet a half an hour to my mechanic yikes!!!!
