Recently my 03 ranger with the 2.3 dohc's CEL came on. About 2-3 weeks ago I had a code for a misfire on startup which I got to go away by doing plugs and wires, this may or may not be relevant. This time the code was for insufficient egr flow, I did some reading and found that that is often caused by the dpfe sensor, so I wanted to check that out before I replaced egr. I do plan on pulling the egr and cleaning it regardless it's just been too wet. Anyway, Im not sure if I have the dpfe. Or I just can't find it. I think the 2003 has a different than typical egr according to my manual. I don't think I I have the tube from exhaust to egr I think they redesigned it (so i cant trace the dpfe vac lines that usually come from here but I'm not sure because I can't find any real information. I've heard from some people that I don't and from some that I do. So I guess my question is do I have a dpfe sensor and if I do where the heck is it? I've looked from every angle I could and moved stuff around and traced hoses and wires and I cannot find it. I can't figure out if it's on the intake manifold or the firewall or anything really. So any suggestions would be great.

 

DPFE doesn't use vacuum hoses.

DPFE will have 2 hoses but they are exhaust hoses, one close to EGR valve, one farther away from EGR valve on the exhaust manifold.
The DPFE sensor reports the pressure difference between the 2 hoses to the computer.
If EGR valve is open the hose closest to the EGR valve will have lower pressure than the one farther away, the bigger the difference the more the EGR valve is open.

But you don't have one of those on the 2.3l Duratec

It uses a stepper motor, like the IAC valve does.
EGR valve and stepper motor are one unit, so are replaced as an assembly.
Computer sends a "step" command to motor and EGR valve opens 05 degrees, another step opens it 10 degrees, ect...
So check connector on EGR valve
