Error code help p0132 and p2196

Hi everyone, new guy here. I have an 03 2.3l and just had the CEL come on. The codes are p0132 and p2196. I assumed it was the oxygen sensor which was replaced but the codes are still showing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is really driving me crazy.

Welcome to the forum

I assume you looked up the codes?
Its very good to post the exact codes, but also good to include the definitions YOU are using, because they could be wrong
Other reason is NO ONE has then all memorized, lol

P0132 02 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank I Sensor 1)
P2196 O2 sensor Signal Biased/Stuck Rich (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

4Cyl engines just have Bank 1
But 2 O2 sensor, sensor 1 and sensor 2
Sensor 1 is closest to the engine called Upstream O2
Sensor 2 is farther away, after Cat Converters, called Downstream O2

Your codes reference Upstream O2 sensor, Bank 1 sensor 1
But not specifically a sensor issue
But O2s are not too expensive and they do wear out at 150k miles so replacing was not a bad idea, but probably not the cause of these codes

O2s output there own voltage, 0.1volt to 0.9volt, voltage is generated inside the O2 sensor
0.1v is Lean, high oxygen in the exhaust
0.9v is Rich, low oxygen in the exhaust
O2s can only see Oxygen

O2 are also Heated, they can't work under 650degF so they are heated by the vehicles electrics
There are 2 heater wires(12 volts) and 2 Sensor wires(under 1volt), so 4 wires total

Because O2s are always on the exhaust system they can get melted wires and this can cause shorts, if one of the 12v wires touches a sensor wire..................RICH, high voltage

Other thing.................is the engine actually running RICH?
Is MPG in the toilet, is there smoke at tail pipe
A stuck open/leaking fuel injector will cause RICH running

Just as an FYI
You should look up codes on a full list before "googling" the code
These are the codes the computer can use in regards to O2 Bank 1 Sensor 1
P0130 02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank I Sensor 1)
P0131 02 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank I Sensor I)
P0132 02 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank I Sensor 1)
P0133 02 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0134 02 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank I Sensor 1)
P0135 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)
P0172 System too Rich (Bank 1)

Computer used P0132 02 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank I Sensor 1)
Not P0172 System too Rich (Bank 1)
This would tend to indicate its not an O2 issue but a circuit or computer issue

Full list here, ignore P2xxx codes for now: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...II_codes.shtml

Thanks for the detailed response, Ron. I'm a shade tree mechanic at best. I did my best to research the error codes but couldn't pinpoint the problem.

It is running rich, but not smoking and I did notice the motor bogging down. After 18 plus years I'm sure the injectors could use a change but taking off the intake looks like a massive job. Are there any ways to test the injectors without removing the intake?

Thanks again for the help.

Are the spark plug tips dark brown or blackish, that's the sign of Rich running
And MPG in the toilet, lol
And computer would for sure set P0172 System too Rich (Bank 1)

Finally had a weekend to work on the truck. Changed out the injectors, intake manifold gaskets, pcv valve, and MAF sensor.

Error code now reads p2195 - which is a lean code. I'm going crazy chasing down the issues.

Any ideas? I think it must be a vacuum leak - is there a diagram of the vacuum hoses online? The hoses I could see all looked fine, but there is one hose that comes off the intake and runs behind the block that I can't see. I'm not sure what this hose is. Is that the pcv hose that connects to the intake? I got a Haynes manual but couldn't find anything helpful.

After engine is warmed up, and idling, unplug the IAC Valves 2 wire connector
Engine idle should drop to 500 or engine may even stall, either is GOOD, it means no vacuum leaks

Thanks Ron.

I pulled the wires to the IAC and the motor died. Guess that means no vacuum leak. While this is good, I’m out of ideas what is wrong.

The truck runs roughest at idle and while warming up. You think it could be the IAC going bad? It’s now intermittently showing the CEL but sometimes it randomly shuts off. This is beyond frustrating.

Has ECT sensor been changed?

ECT sensor tells computer when to SET THE CHOKE
All gasoline engines need to be choked when cold started
Than means HIGH idle and Rich fuel mix
You should never have to touch the gas pedal when starting a fuel injected engine, computer will set the mix and idle for cold or warm start, and engine should REV up above 1,500rpms and then drop to about 1,100rpm if cold, then slowly drop to 750-800 as it warms up

The ECT sensor does that by "telling" computer the coolant temp with key on

Never touched the ECT and frankly never heard of it before today. Guess I’ll order it and see how it goes.

Thanks again, Ron.
