Newbie needs help, (Go figure).

Hey folks!

Got an '02 2.3L banger. Noticed a coolant leak. Coming from the thermo.-housing-sensor. (Why the hell did they do that)? Got a new one on the way. Befor I tear into this, blindly, (have no manual),....is there a procedure for proper burping, at home? The last thing I want to do is burn up the engine over $140 worth of parts. It's my only transpo, next to the VFR and the VFR is no-go for snow. LOL. Help, PLEASE!

I just replaced the radiator in my son's '93 with the 2.3L. I followed no set procedure to burp the system. After replaceing all of the fluid I kept an eye on the overflow tank for a few days and added coolant as necessary. After replaceing the thermo housing sensor I would just flush and fill. Good luck.

what do you mean burp the system?
like get the air bubles out?
i start the truck the pour my fluid in that was it just bubles at the top the once it stops bubling i fill the resovor thing or w/e its called

Yup.

Keep 'em coming guys. Thanks, Cmoore & Bruiser. The last thing I need right now is to burn up my only vehicle that will run in snow. On most occasions, I wouldn't be worried, but being new to the truck, and the engeneering that goes into things, anymore,.... The thermo., being an example,.... I want to be sure I'm at the highest most engine point.

yeah just run the truck while you pour in the colant until the colants level dosent drop and mor then just put the cap on and put colant in the resevor then just keep an eye on it

MY GAWD, HOW RIDICULOUSWAS THAT!?! No more leak. Whatever the sensor is, on the thremo unit, has fragged the wireing harness. Burnt up the connector. Can anyone tell me what those 2 wires are for??????

The thermo was also sprung. The pressed end, spring, and spring plate were just floating around in there. Lucky, I was able to fish them out. Got to see if the junkyard has the connector, that's not rotted.

I'd say its a temp sensor, just go by a junkyard and pull a connector out of another truck and solder it in and you should be all set. Chances are the harness got burnt up from coolant getting in there from the leak and shorting it out. When you connect the nes one use a good amount of di-electric grease in the connector to help seal out any moisture that may come in contact with it.

Thanks. It was evident, that that's what had happened. LOL. It is a rotted mess too. LOL.

Since replacing the thermo assembly, it has shown temp, to the gauge. I don't have an electric fan on it, so that leads me to believe it runs to the ECU. (I now have a check engine light). I would have figured the the lead to the ECU would be right off the temp sensor. (It may be. This is why I ask just what this is for.) Haven't had the junk yard time. (Hope Friday). At least I know I won't burn-up the engine. Which brings the question of the wires, again. Am I gonna load the engine, or simething, not having it hooked-up for a trip to the family's, tomorrow?

I was happy to note the general design, of the engine. Pretty straight forward. Burping went smooth.

the cooling system will work fine without that sensor connected however the engine will probably stay in open loop mode and mileage will go down and the engime wont run quite right because it doesn't know exactly if it is up to temperature or not. It can be driven but the sooner you get it connected the better.

Well, after having the terminal from the harness off, for a couple of days, I was able to get the rest of the chared remains out of it. (I believe due to heating and cooling). Wire brushed the terminals, hooked it back up, and reset the ECU. Seems good.

I went to 4 junk yards. 3 didn't have the terminal, the 4th told me,....get this,...... "We just cut all the wires and yank the engines. We don't keep track of all the harnesses". OK, May I buy one from an engine, that you've pulled? "No. We don't let customers back in the garage", OK, Can you have someone pull one off? "No. We're not gonna waste our time, with that." OK, THANKS A$$-HOLE! BYE!

lol yeah, the ypsi junkyard people can be asses.

i grew up in ypsi and just moved a few months ago, i don't miss it one bit.
i do know the town like the back of my hand, but i hate some of the "people" that think they run the town.
the part i lived in, no one had respect for anyone or anything, but anyways...

goto gene butmans and have them order the plug, im sure they can get it for you.
