01 ranger 4x4 4.0 hard shift issue

Another question, just bought this truck,01 ranger 4x4 4.0 5R55e. Owner said transmission was shifting hard, he put Lucas fix in it. I drained fluid down below full and added a bottle of seafoam, was planning to drive it couple days and drain fluid, and change filter. If I take off and drive nice and easy it shifts into 2nd and 3rd ok but still clucks and kinds lunges when going into 4th. If I take off normal it shifts hard into 2nd, then shifts into 3rd kinda early but smooth, then clunks and lunges when shifting into 4th. If I start out shifting manually it does not shift hard into any gear.turning OD off, 2nd still shifts hard but 4th feels normal. Any ideas? Am I looking at having to replace transmission or has anyone had this issue and fixed by replacing a sensor or something easy lol. No flashing od light or codes of any kind. Thanks.

Hello all, today I changed filter and fluid , about 5 qts came out when I removed pan . So I changed about half the fluid, it helped my shift problem somewhat. Still shifts kinda hard into 2nd but rest of gears shift fine so I’m gonna drive it a while and see what happens. The fluid that came out was kinda dark but didn’t smell burnt.. the magnet had a nice layer of sludge on it but no shavings or anything I could see. Thanks, Jason

So my hard shift problem was still happening . I also noticed when driving steady at 55-60mph my rpm would fluctuate up and down 300 rpm or so without gear change. Today I put a new TPS on truck, drive it and Transmission shift perfect!! I stopped a dozen or so times and accelerated normal, fast, and slow and transmission shifts great. Thought I would update in case someone was having same issue, motor craft part was only about$30.

Good info

Never would have thought TPS would cause that hard shift symptom, the 300rpm up and down yes, so good call

I’ve added seafoam and changed filter and fluid twice, after 2nd change trans shifted hard from 1st-2nd hard every time, and overdrive shift was too early. I just replaced TPS today, I will update in a couple weeks . When I bought truck, the tps was vey loose, had wrong screws in it and would not tighten down. I could not see any # on old one, who knows may not even had been correct one for my truck. But I do know today was the first time in the 3 months I have owned this truck that it shifted normal lol.

140k miles. I rebuilt the timing system, and now that transmission is shifting correctly I think I will enjoy the truck, thanks.
