1993 transmission vs 1995 transmission

Replacing a 1993 manual transmission that locked up while driving, with A 1995 recent rebuilt unit. The 1995 doesn't have the speedometer cable fitting can I just swap tail housings? And will the drive gear For the speedometer swap over without too much hassle?

Welcome to the forum

1993 and 1995 Automatics can't be swapped
1986-1994 Rangers used A4LD with 1 or 2 solenoids
1995 and up Rangers used 4R or 5R with 6 solenoids

Manuals can be IF(big if) they are for the same engine size

All Ranger transmissions had speedometer cable hook up thru 1997, so you don't have a 1995 trans, 1998 and up didn't have speedo cable hook up, tail shift housings can be swapped

4x4 transmissions didn't have speedometer cable hook ups in any years, and can't be used in 2WD vehicles in any case
4x4 Rangers had speedometer cable hook up on transfer case up thru 1997

Thanks, the transmission came off a '95 but was told it was a rebuilt unit. Guess it must be a newer unit. I guess I will take off the tail housing and see if there is a divot in the output shaft for the speedometer gear. Thanks again for the help.

Success

Newer transmission had divot and groove for the speedometer gear. I also used the the top shift plate from the old transmission as it had connections the newer one did not. So almost back together and on the road.

This is a manual trans I would guess

Yes, some came with a Neutral switch on shifter plate, its was never used in Rangers, just Explorers, but Ranger trans can still have that connection, just no wiring for it
