1998 ranger man trans question

lately i have noticed it doesnt like first gear. ill stop at a red light in neutral then when i put it in first it feels like its in but not the whole way and the gear wont engage. i take it out and try to get it back in but it wont do it. i have to pull out in 2nd to not cause a traffic pile up. i dont no if its being picky if a sincro is going of i need a fluid change. its not all the time but its happens more then once since i had it . maybe i just panic and it seems like it doesnt go in. could even be a clutch prob. idk how good my clutch is. it doesnt slip on hills but it does sometime feel sloppy and not hooking up as good as it should when go to move forward. once i start moving i dnt have any problems. any one with this prob
i also notice it will grind first if u try to put it in while goin over 30mph. idk if thats a safety so u dont do anything stupid to ur tranny or not.

Sounds like a master or slave (slave most likely) cylinder giving you issues.

slave cylinder could be leaking causing the clutch to not fully engage but you would have difficulty getting into any gear.
i was having this problem with my truck. on mine the clutch was so worn out the clutch disc was seperating from the clutch pads. this was causing unequal pressure so the clutch was not always engaging properly. i would have to try several times to get the clutch in the right spot to go into gear
