Welcome to the Forum

2001 4.0l Ranger has a 5R55E automatic

No movement in D, but movement in 1 usually means the one-way clutch(sprag) has failed, which would have required a full rebuild to repair at that time
When 1 also stopped working then coast clutch has also failed
Needs a full rebuild

There is some confusion on electric shift transmissions
When you put shifter in to D or R no electrics are used, this is strictly a mechanical routing of valves and pressure
The electric part is just shifting forward gears to match speed and engine rpms
If you have flaring or slipping when computer is shifting gears then that can be a bad solenoid or valve, or lost pressure
But "IN GEAR" is mechanical not solenoid/electrical

If you look for a used 5R55E, it must be from a 2001-2011 4.0l Ranger or Mazda B4000
And in your case from a 4x4, no 2WD to 4WD conversion is possible, or visa versa
Always new torque converter
And if DIY make sure you SEAT the torque converter inside bell housing correctly or you will RUIN the "new" transmission
