2008 Ranger automatic transmission problem.

My friend has a 2008 ranger, I'm guessing a 3.0 but not sure. Anyways she drove and it started smoking, she drove it back home check the Trans fluid and it was full. So now it will not go into park, neutral and it just stays engaged in reverse and drive. What would be the problem? Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the forum

It can be in reverse OR drive, not sure how it can be in both?

Does the shifter on the column work, or does it feel loose, or can't be moved at all?

Transmissions don't "smoke"
Engines can smoke and rear brakes can smoke

Can the vehicle be rolled with engine OFF?

I couldn't tell you, just going by what I was told. She can't shift it out of reverse or drive. Right now she says she has to shut it off in drive. I haven't been over to see what's all wrong with it.

Reads like broken shift cable or shift tube in the column

Not much can be commented on without hands on the vehicle
This would not be a known issue

And the "smoke" would be unrelated, ask about temp gauge
