2x4 to 4x4

I have a 96 2.3 ranger, I was thinking about doing a 4x4 conversion . I could just buy a 4x4 truck but I have plans for it, if I could get some advice on how to or what I need exactly thatd be great. Thanks I’m advance .

Buy a 4x4, or locate a 4x4 frame that's the same length as your truck to use in the swap.

Any 4x4 swap on this truck is going to require a ton of cutting, measuring, welding and bracing. If you're capable of that, that's all you really need.

If you're asking whether you can take the front axle from a 1983-1997 4x4 Ranger and bolt it in your truck, the frames are different and so are the mounts for the beams.

+1 ^^^^

4WD is/was not an "option" like power windows that was added when truck was assembled

A 4x4 Ranger started off with a different frame and was then assembled as a 4WD

So either way, the less expensive way to get a 4WD is to buy one and then either fix it up the way you want or use it for parts and to see where frame needs to be changed on the 2WD to add the front axle
