Welcome to the forum

You can do it, need welding not just wrench work, 4wd has different frame up front than 2wd.
And you need to get the 4 wheel alignment down which is not all that easy.

Better option would be to sell the 2.8l running 2wd ranger and buy a 2.9l 4wd ranger that needs the "working" parts you have on the wrecked 2.9l 4wd ranger, i.e. engine transmission, bed, ???

Yes, the 2.8l and 2.9l used the same mounts and transmission bolt pattern, so can be swapped, but...............2.8l uses carburetor with simple computer, very little wiring, the 2.9l is 60-wire computer controlled which needs all the sensors and wiring harness moved over with it, so not plug 'n play

The front end needs to be swapped over to change 2wd to 4wd, and you have to fabricate the mounting points, so you have to make sure front wheels and back wheels are true and aligned or vehicle will "crab" down the road, i.e. like having a bent frame, rear wheels are going east and front wheels are going west , when you just want to go North, lol.

My truck I use as a plow / work truck was 2wd, previous owner converted it over to 4x4. It can be done, I'd imagine there's some work to swapping it over
