ballpark cost of a junkyard expy disc brake 8.8" axle?
#1
Its something I'm interested in doing in the next 6-12 months, in addition to upgrading the front brakes. stopping power is important to me, and in a rain storm tonight I guess my drums flooded going through alot of standing water on the road (it was coming up over the hood and I was only going 30.) I anticipated the problem and did a few practice stops when there was no traffic around me, but it could have been potentially bad. I have noticed that with the 32"s on there, stopping power isn't up to my standards.. I can still get it to stop fine, but I have to use more brake than I feel I should.

geez, i cant think of where to get it right now. as far as the expy axle, if i had to guess a price for a complete one at a JY iw ould say at least $200 with the rear discs. then you gotta think its in the junkyard either from high miles or an accident. then you have to put new perches and maybe shock mounts on. i would find some prices locally on the axle and base your decision on that.

if you get the explorer axle, 2 things, you can either get the explorer leafs and axle to make it about stock ranger hieght, or you can get new spring perches welded ontop the axle so it can sit the same way a ranger axle does...(most shops can do that, if you supply the perch, for about 20-30 bucks)
Also, the explorer is a direct swap in, remove your axle and install the new one, only replacement parts needed is wider axle ubolts...
I have seen explorer axles go for as much as 400, but have also seen then as low as 100, infact the boneyard by me is selling explorer axles for about 95 plus tax, and thats where my friend got his...and even if you throw on new rotors(40-80bucks) and new pad(15-40bucks) its still can be a good deal...
Im not sure about the SSBC kit, and id be curious if it comes with everything needed. Theres a guy on ebay selling a kit to turn the drums into disc, however its jsut the brackets so you would need pads, rotors, calipers, and such...
IMO i would go for the explorer axle and just jsut get the perchs rewelded ontop

i never thought about taking the leaves from the explorer too, good call, but i wonder if they bolt up the same?? as far as SSBC goes, they do make quality stuff and comes with everything needed. i know D. has the rear disc kit on his truck, and i plan on getting the front disc kit for the torino from them.
like i said though, find an axle price first and go from there!!

yeah, my friend installed explorer leafs on his 94 fits up just fine... if you use explorer leafs with ranger axle and keep the axle under the leaf it will raise the rear up about 3-4inchs, if you use the explorer axle ontop of the leafs, it will drop it down 3-4, so basically it will be back at stock hieght for an explorer

Ive had the kit sitting on my workbench for.. ... Since.. When did I race Dr Skots brother Eric? Like November? December? I broke My spool and was going to do the whole axle and a local shop put a whole axle in for me for a xmas present of sorts..
I'll eventually get around to doing it.
I originally spoke with Mark at SSBC. Its in Williamsville ( Suburb of Buffalo ) . *IF* we could have had 10 orders, we could have STOLE the kits for like 350$ each!!!!! Unfortunatly.. it didn't pan out and I bought mine on my own for a LOT less then 600$ ( for 6 bills I would have grabbed an explorer axle and rebuilt it ).
I'll give Mark a ring this week or I MIGHT see him out on the waterfront with his ric.. er Eclipse and shoot the sod with him.. Get a price for ya.
