4wd issue

2005 ranger FX4. is the front drive shaft supposed to spin in 2wd? have the front off the ground to check wheel bearings and as i spun the the hub everything connected to it spun. I than started the truck, put it in 4wd and spun the front wheel by hand and no difference. should it be able to spin in 4wd or should it be locked? Help!!!

Welcome to the forum

Yes, 2001 and up Ranger 4x4s use Live Axles up front, so front hubs are locked full time and front differential and drive line will spin with front wheels.

In 4WD the front wheels could turn because of the "shift on the fly" clutch in the transfercase.
When driving in 4WD you should "feel" the pull on the steering wheel when cornering on a dry surface, thats the best way to tell if front axle is getting power from transfercase
