Alright, I have an 02 edge 4x2.

I'm bored with the truck, so I figure a 4wd conversion may be in order. I'm pretty damn handy with cars, so that's no problem.

Just some quick questions. I'm keeping the IFS. Not interested in doing SAS.

1. T-Case. Mounting points? Weld up new ones, or do the trucks come with them? I want a manual T-Case, but sourcing a manual tcase from a newer body style ranger is gonna be a toughie. Will a ranger with TTB's tcase work?

2. I heard about problems with auto's and shift points when converting to 4wd. Even though the sensor is on the trans, not the diff's. True, not true? Fix?

3. Drive shafts. I remember reading about explorer driveshafts. I have a single cab btw. Source a single cab 4x4 driveshaft? All models the same, or will IFS come into play?

4. ECU. PCM. Keep 4x2, or get 4x4?

Anything else I would need besides cv's, knuckles, front diff, tcase, tcase motor/harness (should I get an electronic for a great deal)

1. The T case doesn't have its own mount if you are thinking like a tranny mount. If you keep your tranny you will need to switch the tailshaft housing and the output shaft. The 2wd and 4wd tranny crossmembers are different.

2. There should be no difference in shift points.

3. Rear shaft may be different.

4. You would have to get the 4wd computer to make the stock case work. I'd say just get a case from Stak.

The only problem I see is that the 2wd trucks lack one of the mounts for the front diff. You would have to do something with that.

I'm sure someone will chime in with more info. Most importantly do some searching. I would personally buy a 4wd truck if I want 4wd. Oh I did.

you have an edge, there have been people who did the swap already, requires a lot of parts to swap it over but most of it is a bolt in design. The trans will have to be pulled apart or you can get a new one as the tail shaft has to be swapped out so it can be mated to a transfer case.

 

1. Everything is bolt on for this swap except the support bracket for the differential. If you have any sort of fab skill it will be no problem at all to make it.

2. Not true.

3. IFS will come into play. TTB shafts will be too long. Also it will depend on what kind of flange the t-case has as to what year driveshaft you'll need for the front. Rear driveshaft will be easy. E-bay or junkyard for a regular cab 4x4 Ranger. 98-up.

4. Keep 4x2. No need to swap the computer.

The electronic t-case is much harder to make work with a truck not originally wired for it. Stick with a manual case, its easier and more reliable.

Don't forget you'll have to either replace the tranny with a 4x4 one or rebuild the current one with a 4x4 output shaft and extension housing.

You'll also need the wheel bearings with ABS sensors from a 4x4 2001-up Ranger or 4x4 95-up Explorer. Assuming you'll want the live axle setup that is.

i say keep it 4x2 and lift it to where you want it. unless you really plan on using the 4x4 alot then go for it.

 

I've done it as well and I'm going to be doing it again real soon. I did the electric transfer case which requires changing the dash harness and body computer, not the ecm. I was thinking I would go manual transfer case on this one to avoid the harness but I already have the electric tc.

Will a 4.0 trans bolt up to a 3.0?

Yeah, I'm going junkyard searching for a manual Tcase. Any ones I should be looking for? Any years/models to avoid?

Will any explorer tcase bolt up? How about bronco?

 

4.0 trans will not bolt up to a 3.0, different bell housing.

 

I just sold my other car, so the ranger is gonna have to get done in 2 days.

I'm gonna just buy stuff one piece at a time till I have everything I need, then fab up the diff mount, then do a quick test fit on the questionable parts, then the next week I'm gonna bolt it all up. So stay tuned as I slowly (but surely) do this build.

 

I honestly wouldn't use 4wd that often. I just need something to spend money/occupy my time since my VW is gone. I can't leave a car stock. Stuff bugs me.

I figure 4wd conversion is the best thing to do. I'm not one for engine swaps on daily drivers.

...unless someone has a cheap 79-98 VW they don't want.

3.0 4x4's auto's seem to be hard (er) to find. Maybe a 5 speed swap is in order as well..

 

If you think about its pretty easy to seperate the swap into different weekend jobs. Like swapping in the 4wd trans, transfer case and driveshaft is one thing. Then all the front suspension is another. I think its possible to do it with minimal downtime.

Might be easier to find a totaled 4x4 and swap the parts, an 06 was floating around me for $1600 then you have all the parts and if you find a good one you can swap the 4.0 in as well.

 

No interest in engine swap.

 

Explorer cases will work, 91-94 were the only years with manual cases, 95-01 all had electric cases. Bronco II case will work but its the weaker 1350 model case. Fullsize bronco will not work.

2001-up only. I made the mistake of initially getting a 98-00 tranny for mine. They don't have a speed sensor in them, that means no speedo, no cruise, no odometer, and constant CEL. I had to have and extra week of downtime while I exchanged the tranny for the correct one. Dont make that mistake.

Very true. I did that when I did mine. I did all the frontend components one weekend and then did the driveshafts/tranny/t-case a different weekend.
