Icon4 4X4 TROUBLE!

hi everyone, sorry i havent been on much. anyways ive been having trouble with my 4x4 in my 97.(automatic hubs) i figured id consult ranger forums for advice.. So my when i put it into 4x4 i heard a grinding like noise and some popping coming from driverside front tire also when i put it back into reverse i hear my driverside tire whining or humming? put back in drive 2X4 she drives normal. hubs? transfercase? please tell me what you think.

Sounds like the auto hubs to me need an upgrade.

Although with the TTB trucks it could be the u joint on the driver side.

If you dont wheel it, I would suggest upgrading to milemarker lockout hubs or something simularly cheap. Dont forget to get the new spindle hardware (inner/outer nut, lockwasher) as well.

The auto hubs are a waste of time IMHO. Really not worth fixing bc they're a constant problem waiting to happen.

As for checking the u-joint, reach in between the knuckle and check for play. Im willing to be the u-joint that would be bad is the inner driverside u-joint by the differential.
