5R55E Compatibility

Quick question for all the experts out there.

I have a 99 Ranger 4.0 4x4 in need of a new tranny. I found one from a 97 Explorer with one problem. The Explorer 5R55E has an extra sensor located right behind the bellhousing towards the top of the transmission. Will this still work in my application or should I keep looking.

Electronics changed in 97
Ranger changed its VSS in 98

I would swap over anything external from your original trans and this one.

What do you mean, everything external? I have not bought this transmission yet. What is in the picture is all I would be getting. What is the extra sensor near the bell housing that my 99 does not have?

In 98 they deleted the OSS from the trans and went to the rear end for the VSS.

Its not a perfect match but could be made to work.

That trans is missing things off the outside like brackets and what not, so you would need to swap them on.
